BIOGRAPHY B.K.S. IYENGAR
1918, Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was born in the Bellur district of Karnataka. He faced difficulties in the early stages of life itself. B.K.S. Iyengar was born into a large poor family and immediately after his birth, he fell in the grips of an influenza epidemic that left him frail and unhealthy.
1934 he went to Mysore to live with his eldest sister and her husband, Sri T. Krishnamacharya, that soon became his teacher.It was in his school that Iyengar learnt the basic asana of Yoga, which led to a considerable improvement in his health.
1936, his Guru asked him to teach in Pune. Slowly and gradually, B.K.S. Iyengar gained recognition as a teacher.
1966 he published his first book “Light on Yoga” and went to become one of the international bestsellers.
1975, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute in Pune was opened in memory of of his late wife.
2014, B.K.S. Iyengar passed away at the age of 95 years.
Both his eldest daughter Geeta Iyengar and his son Prashant Iyengar have become internationally known teachers in their own right as well as his grand daughter Abhijata Sridhar Iyengar.
